Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

hi
I'm pretty sure that it is Orange Orange Red Gold, the order does matter, the last metallic coloured band simply states the tolerences of the resister, silver is plus minus 10% gold is plus minus 5 %, or something along those lines if i'm not mistaken. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong

edit: here's a link to the colour chart for resistors:

I don't know if the order matters, but I bought both 1/2 watt, and 1/4 watt 3.3K resistors and they both go:
gold, red, orange, orange. OR orange, orange, red, gold(if you have it flipped around. lol)

I have not tried the 1/4 watt resistors yet but they should work just find and are about half the size of the 1/2 watt.

I just bought the resistors today from RS... They come in this larger package with 25 resistors that contain 1k, 2.2k, 3.3k, and 4.7k

I dont know how to read the colour combo things... and as seen above reggiewolf put gold, red, orange, orange. OR orange, orange, red, gold....

and I look at the tut picture and the resistor on there is completely different colour?

so... What is the real colour combo for 3.3k?

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

I did this mod a while ago and havnet had a problem with it. But i used a slightly less resistant resistors. Still goes to lock though, and no chatter.

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

yah i also did this mod and when i turn in either direction if i turn fast i can hear chatter but when i slowly turn the knob then theres no chatter. Also i had issues getting the resistors to fit back in because the black plastic piece where u hook the light command kit is rubbing against the resistors. did anyone else come across this? i ended up cutting up the black plastic cover piece, any other solutions?

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

Okay I just did this mod but when I turn it to the left I hear a grinding sound and it bearly goes. But if I turn it to the right it works fine. I cant find the problem what do you think it could be?

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

I got mine fixed. One of my solder joints had come undone. The mod works great. I took it out and was drifting it in my garage. So much easier to do now that it actually steers!!

Thanx again

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

If you can solder, you can do it. And I haven't heard of anyone killing their servo with this. Just make sure that when you cut the wires, you sloder the resistors to the right wires, or it will steer the opposite it should. When you cut or desolder the orange wire, make sure that you solder the resistor only to the orange wire (or its tab on the servo)...

Other then that, it's as easy as fixing your battery wires, and I think EVERYONE knows how to do that!! LOL

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

I just got everything working again and am deathtly afraid of killing my servo... really, how easy is it, and how possible is it to kill ur servo?

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

the servo has a cirquit in it that constantly tries to center the servo. With the new upgrade the servo turns with enough force to go slightly PAST center, and then when it tries to come back to center, it goes past in the other direction, constantly. The is the chatter. If you hold the wheel for a second exactly at center it should stop...

I would definately check your wires. Tell me, if you turn the car on and the controller OFF and physically force the wheels to a center position, and then turn the control on, do the wheels instantly turn to the left? that would be one of the signal wires from the servo... It is trying to center and thinking that the wheels are too far to the right because of a loose wire, so it is trying to correct it by turning more to the left....

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

I just got done with the mod and it makes a HUGE difference. I have 2 questions now though.

1) My steering servo now has a chatter in it that doesnt go away until I adjust the trim on the controller a bit.

2) After driving my car for a few minutes the steering just went crazy and locked all the way left. Now I dont have any steering. Any Ideas??? (Loose connection or something?)

Anyway, hopefully one of you Gurus has an idea as to whats going on.

Thanx for the great tip!!!!

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

DO you think it was the mod that caused the electronics problems, or did you just not put it back in after changing something else?

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

i soldered mine straight to the servo and it was awsome since then ive had to replace most of the electronics so i dont run the mod anymore if your intrested in performance xmodspeed.com has a pic of stock and tight turnz radius go check it out

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

you simply need to attach a 3.3k ohm resistor somehwere in the orange wire, and another somewhere in the brown wire, were ever you think is most appropriate. Some people like to put them in the middle of the wire, while others solder them directly to the servo.

Re: Aftermarket steering upgrade

I believe the resistors will work the same both ways so it doesnt matter.

It will help in making much tighter turns. As I have not done this mod yet I can't give you any exact specs. Sorry..

As for drifting, I can only imagine it will make drifting easier... You'll have to get used to your steering reacting quicker...

This may sound dumb but does it matter which way the resistors face?

ah, the famous resistor fix. it rocks! and gsxr: i dont flip, my xmod suddenly goes from understeer to oversteer! :P

Ok, I haven't tried this one yet, but I am going to.

This mod increases your ability to make tight turns by modifying the resistor on the steering servo.
As I have not purchased one, I have no idea how similar this is to the TiteTurnz upgrade, but I can only assume that they are not far off.
Be aware that this mod does void your warrantee.

Skills needed:
If you can solder wires successfully, you can do this. Try reading Xmodspeed's soldering tutorial if you need some help.

Tools needed:
Soldering iron with a conical tip and solder
something to cut and strip wires with
a neat clean workspace
shrink tubing or electrical tape
(2)3.3k ohm 1/2w 5% carbon film resistors.

[=1]

  • start by clearing off a large space to work. This isn't one that you can do in your lap in front of T. V.

  • I CANNOT stress this step enough. Take your batteries out and put them somewhere else! If your antenna or the wire to it touches the batteries or any power source within the car, guess what, your range is fried. Been there, power source ask.

  • You will need to disassemble your car enough to get to the wires that run from the ESC to the Steering Servo. This includes removing the front deck and four screws, two screws beneath the car near the power switch, one screw near the antenna wire on top, the rear deck, and both parts of the motor mount. Virtually, stripping everything. . .

  • There are two small wires and three large wires going from the ESC to the steering servo. Cut the large brown one and the large orange one. Trust me. I don't :P Some say it is better to do this in the middle of the wires and some say it is better to de solder the wires from the servo and add the resistors between the servo itself and the wires, as in this picture:

  • If you are using shrink wrap, now is the time to slide a piece over the wires.

  • You want to solder the orange wire from the ESC to one resistor's lead and the other lead to the orange wire to the steering servo. Do the same with the brown wires and the other resistor. For the best soldering techniques, read the soldering tutorial. It is very informative.

  • Once your soldering work is done, slip the tubing over your connections and use the tip of your soldering iron to shrink the tubing. DO NOT TOUCH THE TUBING with the Iron, instead hold the iron under the tubing letting the heat rise up and around it.

  • [*:557a070d08]Now just get everything to fit properly in your car again and try it out!! [/:o:557a070d08]
Thank You Teammnm for the pic.

my question is do you solder the resistor in between the wire you cut and put heat shrink over the resistor? pics dont show the resistor inbetween the wire. what kind of steering performance will this provide for my mod?

This mod works very well, If you are going fast you will need to adjust the remote so it will not be so sensitive or it will flip the car.
